Several Operation Methods of CNC Machining Thread Cutting

Jul 05 , 2023 | Blog

In the processing process, different thread requirements require different methods and methods. The trapezoidal thread has a long length, large pitch, deep cutting, strong cutting force, high precision requirements, and difficult processing. When processing ordinary threads, if every The cutting depth of the cutting tool is the same, so the force on the cutting edge on both sides of the thread turning tool will increase sharply with the increase of the material removal rate, resulting in a decrease in thread accuracy and damage to the tool. And each cutting depth must be decreased according to a certain ratio. Internal threads and external threads are relatively common. Generally, the processing difficulty is relatively small, and it is enough to pay attention to the calculation of the thread bottom. Today we will tell you about the main methods of thread cutting on CNC lathes:

1. Grooving rough cutting method, first use a grooving tool smaller than the width of the thread turning tool to roughly cut a groove, and then use the thread turning tool to process threads. Large pitch threads are often used, but the operation and programming are extremely cumbersome.

2. In the staggered cutting method, the thread turning tool feeds in a staggered direction along the direction parallel to the left and right tooth sides respectively, until the bottom of the tooth. It is very suitable for thread cutting of large threads, but the programming is more complicated.

3. Oblique feed method, which refers to the feed in the Z direction and the X direction is also linked to form a slanted feed method. At this time, only one cutting edge of the thread turning tool is involved in cutting, and the chip removal is smoother, and the force and heat are not affected. It is smaller than the straight-forward method, but when the thread depth is deep and the pitch is large, it is easy to cause the knife phenomenon.

4. Straight-forward method means that when the lathe is cutting, the linear motion in the Z direction does not change, and a cutting depth is fed in stages in the X direction, which is convenient, fast, and efficient. Usually, ordinary threads with small pitches can be used, but the turning tool is easy Wear, swarf will scratch the thread surface.
