CNC and 3D Printing: How to Choose?
CNC machining and 3D printing are two of the most widely used digital manufacturing technologies, but they operate in fundamentally different ways.
CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process. It cuts away material from a solid block to get your part. It suits high-precision parts, metal components, large-volume prototypes and pieces requiring good surface finish. Limitations: complex internal hollow structures are hard or expensive to make.
3D printing (additive manufacturing) builds parts layer by layer. It excels at complicated geometries, lattice structures and one-off custom samples. It is fast for small single pieces. Drawbacks: lower material strength compared with CNC metals, limited size and poorer surface quality in most cases.
Quick selection guide
- Pick CNC, if you need: metal parts, tight tolerance, good surface finish, medium batch production.
- Pick 3D printing, if you need: complex internal shapes, quick low-quantity prototypes, lightweight lattice designs.
