What is prototype model making?

Jan 19 , 2024 | Blog

Prototype model making refers to the process of using hand or CNC machine tools and other tools to process raw materials into models with specific shapes and functions based on design drawings or physical requirements. These models are mainly used to verify the feasibility and practicality of design solutions, or to demonstrate the appearance and structure of products. Prototyping is an important engineering skill that is valuable to professionals in product design and manufacturing.

The prototype model making process usually includes the following steps:

1. Prepare design drawings and physical requirements: The size, shape, structure and other requirements of the required model are described in detail on the design drawings. The production personnel need to carefully read and understand these drawings and clarify the production requirements.

2. Choose appropriate materials: Choose appropriate raw materials based on the use occasion and functional requirements of the model. Commonly used materials include plastics such as ABS, PLA, and PVC, and other materials such as wood and metal can also be used.

3. Modeling and repair: Use CAD software or directly use handheld modeling tools to model, and then perform detailed processing and repair on the model to ensure that the accuracy and quality of the model meet the requirements.

4. Processing and assembly: Use CNC machine tools, laser cutting machines and other mechanical processing equipment to cut, grind, drill and other processing of raw materials, and then assemble the various components together to complete the production of the model.

5. Inspection and acceptance: Finally, inspect and accept the completed model, including dimensional inspection, functional testing, etc., to ensure that the model meets the design requirements and usage requirements.
